Saturday July 13, 2025.
At the Matane Lighthouse (968, avenue du Phare Ouest, Matane)

Why July 13? Because that's when it all began on our river! On July 13, 1801, the governor received recommendations from captains of ships attached to the merchant navy. This petition highlighted the need to improve safety in the waters of the St. Lawrence by installing a network of navigational aids:

"It is suggested, that among other improvements a Light-House erected on Green Island, and buoys placed in different situation in the South Traverse would tend much to the safety of vessels, bound either up or down and greatly facilitate the navigation in those parts of the River, which are considered as the most difficult and dangerous between Bic and Quebec."

Subsequently, the Maison de la Trinité de Québec was created in 1805, and construction of the first lighthouse began the following year. Our network of lighthouses was born!

Program to come.
